L. M. “Mac” Holder III, FAIA, formed his architectural firm in Austin, Texas in 1976 to create environmentally compatible architecture. He has been responsible for projects from million-squarefoot urban multi-use high rise buildings to 150-square-foot cabins for the homeless. His award-winning projects range from local to regional to national. He obtained his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968 and was made a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects for “pioneering work in energy conscious design and advancing the profession’s ability to create environmentally compatible architecture” in 1996. L.M. Holder provides energy, day lighting, and consulting services for professional, institutional, public, and private clients. He researches historic examples, designs new buildings, shares information with others, and gives lectures and seminars for professionals and non-professionals alike. His leadership promotes alternative performance energy standards to allow design freedom and promote innovation when prescriptive standards are overly restrictive. He has published over thirty articles and presented over ninety speaking engagements, seminars and workshops on topics in sustainability. Holder is a pioneer in researching methods of making the transition to a sustainable future and sharing this information with others, creating buildings that serve as benchmarks for energy efficient design, even creating buildings and structures which generate more energy than they use. Throughout his career he endeavors to be part of the ultimate solution to create a quality environment which can be sustained.
